LACAC Internships | 2 Opportunities

During their internships, students have the opportunity to participate in at least two Peer Group events. These spaces are meant to complement students’ experiences within their host organizations by allowing them to explore other facets of finding (or securing) a job, creating and maintaining an artistic practice, and more. Each Peer Group, led by a local arts professional, supports students in meeting other interns, building their network, and learning more about the arts ecology of the region. As part of the Arts Internship Program, students are required to attend at least two Peer Group meetings as part of their paid internship hours.

Beginning summer 2019, Peer Groups will be organized by theme, and participating interns will be assigned to a Peer Group based on preferences they submit to the Arts Commission. Each theme will be offered in multiple geographic regions of the County.

The Arts Internship Program will coordinate 20 Peer Groups in summer 2019. Below is the list of the themes offered. Click on the theme to see a short description, information on the Peer Group Leader, and the general area where the Peer Group events will occur. Participating interns may submit Peer Group preference based on theme, geography, or both.

Getty Marrow Undergraduate Internship Program

Aiming to encourage greater diversity in the professions related to museums and the visual arts, the Getty Marrow Undergraduate Internship program in Los Angeles supports substantive, full-time summer work opportunities for college undergraduates from cultural backgrounds that have traditionally been underrepresented in the arts. Since the program began in 1993, 161 local arts institutions, including the Getty, have hosted over 3,300 internships, exposing students to career possibilities in the arts. Originally titled the Multicultural Undergraduate Internship program, its name changed in late 2018 with announcement of the retirement of long-time Getty Foundation director Deborah Marrow, who began the program. About the artworxLA Arts Education Internship

The artworxLA Arts Education Internship is an invaluable experience in museum education, especially for those interested in school, teen, and outreach programs. The Arts Education intern will provide essential assistance in preparing for 2018–19 classroom programming, including: assisting with reporting on program evaluation projects; compiling research on three museum exhibition initiatives; assisting with the organization of the 2019 Summer Teaching Institute for Teaching Artists and classroom teachers; assisting with the design of the Teaching Artist Handbook, the principal document articulating artworxLA’s philosophy and methodology; and hands-on experiences in object- and inquiry-based learning. The Arts Education Internship is an excellent introduction to facilitating relevance and meaning for specific audiences, especially alternative education youth, by tailoring museum exhibition content through gallery and classroom explorations.

Qualified candidates will be of a group underrepresented in museums and visual arts organizations, including, but not limited to, individuals of African American, Asian, Latino/Hispanic, Native American, or Pacific Islander descent; be currently enrolled undergraduates. Students must have completed at least one semester or two quarters of college by June 2019. Students graduating in May or June 2019 are also eligible. (Students who are enrolled in a second BA or BS program are not eligible.); reside or attend college in Los Angeles County; and be a United States citizen or permanent resident. Successful candidates will have completed coursework in the arts, art history, or related fields; a passion for working for the benefit of youth/community; an interest in museum or arts education; and an interest in design and/or illustration.
