Exploring Rituals of Care with Brenzy

How can creative expression be a tool for healing and care?

Workshop Coordinator Brenzy will guide you through two creative writing activities that can be used to to help anyone overcome a challenging time.

In the mythological flood story of Noah’s Ark, do you know what the chapter on “the storm” symbolize? The “storm” in Noah’s Ark at the Skirballl Cultural Center in Los Angeles, California represents a challenging time for someone. An example of a “storm” is the COVID-19 pandemic. By clicking on the video above Workshop Coordinator Brenzy shares with you how writing can be a tool to “weather a storm,”—overcome a challenging time in your life.

To get started you will need:

  • Two pieces of paper

  • Pencil

  • Tape

Now that you have all of your supplies, follow the instructions below to complete the the first writing activity.

ACTIVITY 1: TAKE WHAT YOU NEED!

STEP 1: WRITE On one sheet of paper, write 10 words or phrases that can give another person the feeling of comfort.

STEP 2: CUT On a separate sheet of paper, set it horizontally and cut nine rectangular strips at the bottom of the paper. Use the image as a reference.

STEP 3: DECORATE

Refer to your word list from step one, and write a word on each of the ten strip of paper. At the top center of the paper write, “Take What You Need.” If you’re feeling extra creative, decorate it.

STEP 4: POST IT UP Tape

your sign anywhere around the place you are currently sheltering in. Make sure its a place that people frequently walk by. So, whenever someone is going through a challenging time, they can come by and rip a strip of paper by “taking what they need” to comfort them.


ACTIVITY 2: HAIKU

To help you write a Haiku refer to the list of words from the “Take What You Need” activity.

To get started you will need a piece of paper and pencil.
